IN oRBit: PADDLING AROUND MANHATTAN
Today’s Red Bank oRBit brings you the data on some high-profile midweek concerts, including a benefit for the Count Basie Theatre restoration project starring Counting Crows — in addition to an oddball fundraising event that’s likely taking shape even as you read these words.
Organized by Surfers’ Environmental Alliance (SEA) and its exec director, Sea Bright’s Andrew Mencinsky, the third annual SEA Paddle NYC assembles some of the world’s best known surfers, along with an allstar field of waveriding figures from entertainment and business, for a lap around the island of Manhattan — a total distance of 28 miles — on stand-up paddle boards.
It’s a benefit on behalf of autism-awareness organizations like Surfers Healing and Autism Speaks — and this year’s VIPs include SEA board member and Monmouth Beach extreme sports celeb Darian Boyle (pictured), plus SEA veep Darrick Doerner, surf legends Garrett McNamara and Izzy Paskowitz, and Baywatch actor David Chokachi. Then there’s Red Bank restaurateur Jamian LaViola, who offers some thoughts on his participation (and a way for all of us to get involved) right here.
We’re taking the scenic route up the foothills of the midweek hump, in the pixelated pages of Red Bank oRBit.
