Santa Monica, CA

Join the MSA as part of our 2009 'Goes' series. This month we go to the big screen premiere of MSA Member and 'Wave Killer' Allen Sarlo's documentary 'Work To Surf'.

Almost ten years in the making, Work to Surf chronicles the life and times of Allen Sarlo, one of the surfing world's most accomplished and committed performers. From the earliest days in Venice's Dogtown haunts to earning his place in the legendary Malibu lineup; from the birth of professional surfing to the cutting edge of big wave tow-in surfing; from ultimate local to consummate world traveler, Allen 's story is as diverse as the sport itself.

Yet Allen's has not been the typical surfer's path. The foundation of his lifelong obsession has been an extraordinary work ethic that has afforded Allen the balance necessary for an integral surfing life--the true measure of success and an inspiration to surfers and non-surfers alike.

Shot and edited by renowned surfing cinematographer Dave Ogle , Work To Surf takes us from the beaches of Malibu to hidden barrels in Mexico, from Oahu's thundering North Shore to the wild islands of Indonesia, from desert Baja pointbreaks to 30-foot Island outer reefs.

Featuring the surfing of Mark Foo, Kelly Slater, Jay Riddle, Rob Machado, Yadin Nicol, Pat O'Connell, Bobby Owens, Jay Adams, Peter Cole and Derrick Doerner, mixed to a dynamic soundtrack that includes songs by Ben Harper, Work to Surf is a colorful portrait of a surfer who has made it work, year after year, swell after swell, wave after wave.

IN oRBit: Paddling Around Manhattan

IN oRBit: PADDLING AROUND MANHATTAN

Today’s Red Bank oRBit brings you the data on some high-profile midweek concerts, including a benefit for the Count Basie Theatre restoration project starring Counting Crows — in addition to an oddball fundraising event that’s likely taking shape even as you read these words.

Organized by Surfers’ Environmental Alliance (SEA) and its exec director, Sea Bright’s Andrew Mencinsky, the third annual SEA Paddle NYC assembles some of the world’s best known surfers, along with an allstar field of waveriding figures from entertainment and business, for a lap around the island of Manhattan — a total distance of 28 miles — on stand-up paddle boards.

It’s a benefit on behalf of autism-awareness organizations like Surfers Healing and Autism Speaks — and this year’s VIPs include SEA board member and Monmouth Beach extreme sports celeb Darian Boyle (pictured), plus SEA veep Darrick Doerner, surf legends Garrett McNamara and Izzy Paskowitz, and Baywatch actor David Chokachi. Then there’s Red Bank restaurateur Jamian LaViola, who offers some thoughts on his participation (and a way for all of us to get involved) right here.

We’re taking the scenic route up the foothills of the midweek hump, in the pixelated pages of Red Bank oRBit.

SEA Paddle NYC Announces Black & White Parties To Promote Autism Awareness & Coastal Preservation

August 18, 2009

PRESS RELEASE

SEA Paddle NYC (www.seapaddlenyc.org) will kick off its third year of raising money to promote autism awareness and coastal preservation on Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 7:00pm at the "Black Party," a new event on the SEA Paddle calendar hosted by Iceberg Vodka and Gallery Bar, located on Manhattan's Lower East Side (www.gallerybarnyc.com www.gallerybarnyc.com />). The evening will feature special celebrity guests and a surf art show as well as a raffle and auction. Iceberg Vodka and Berentzen Spirits is sponsoring a complimentary hour of Iceberg Vodka featuring the signature SEA Surfer Cocktail.

Josh Boyd, an owner of Gallery Bar, adds "I fancy myself a body surfer and my dad's a surfer so we're excited to be hosting a related event to raise money for autism awareness and coastal preservation. We have a dynamic space that partygoers just love, and I know we're going to have a great night. In addition to our gallery, Iceberg Vodka's signature cocktail and our great cuisine, NYC artist Anthony Cito, who is currently on exhibit at Gallery Bar, will be creating live portraits during the event. We're just lucky to be able to host organizations like the Surfer's Environmental Alliance and help do some good, and we're thrilled to be welcoming everyone to Gallery Bar to kick off this year's SEA Paddle."

Boasting a new twist on nightlife, Gallery Bar is an exciting addition to the booming Lower East Side. By day Gallery Bar exhibits works by established and emerging artists, but once the sun sets Gallery Bar transitions into a hip bi-level lounge. Legendary Waterman Darrick Doerner will be signing autographs at the Black Party.

Iceberg Vodka, the main ingredient in the evening's signature cocktail, is manufactured by the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation and is produced using pure, pristine water from melted icebergs. This proprietary source of water and its unique distillation process have earned Iceberg Vodka the Golden Icon Award for Best Vodka in 2006-2007.

Just two nights after the "Black" Party, the White Water Evening is a stoked night of fun, dinner, dancing and cool ocean breezes at a breathtaking beachfront estate in Monmouth Beach, NJ. At 7:00p on Aug 22, just as the sun begins to set on the horizon, white-clad guests from all across the country gather to spread some aloha for the paddle.

Enjoy a casually elegant evening spent mingling with celebrity paddlers, open bar, sampling the delicious, vacation-inspired cuisine of veteran Jersey Shore Chef Marilyn Schlossbach of Langosta Lounge(www.langostalounge.com) , and dance to reggae band Predator Dub Assassins and, flying in from LA for the party, MK & The Gentlemen from La Cali. Other highlights include an auction of handmade and signed surfboards, music memorabilia, including an autographed item from U2's Edge, a trip to Bali, and other exclusive items.

Langosta Lounge is quickly becoming one of the hottest restaurants on the Jersey Shore. Open less than two years and located in the middle of the rebirth of historic Asbury Park NJ, Chef Schlossbach is earning high praise satiating her patrons with exotic creations such as her jalapeno-infused tequila drinks, Lobster Enchiladas and Labrador Asian Barbecue Baby Back Ribs.
